RECRUITERS Use LinkedIn Publisher, Even if You Dont Have it! Do you have LinkedIn Publisher? Do you even know what I am talking about? Its a relatively new feature on LinkedIn. If you have it you will see a pencil in your share an update field on your LinkedIn home page. Ive had it for a while and for the record, I am totally loving it. I love it so much that I post regularly (weekly) content on it and it has massively improved my LinkedIn profile views and overall visibility. Iâve even created video to help you lovely recruiters see how you can get the most out of â" even if you have absolutely nothing to say and no time to say it! I review why you should publish content and give you some nifty tips on how to use LinkedIn Publisher. (Images, YouTube videos, headings and linkâ¦) I review how to get your Twitter followers to get engaged with your LinkedIn profile so you can widen your community I review how you can see who is following you and thus your posts (even if theyâre not connected to you, and some interesting stats around this Bear in mind that if you do not have the magic pencil in your status update window on your homepage, you may be able to apply for LinkedIn Publisher here: http://specialedition.linkedin.com/publishing/ it states that the waiting list is full and to keep checking back⦠I review why you should NOT use it for jobs (and I know that some of you naughty recruiters are). I review how you can follow people on LinkedIn without being connected to them (FBI style) I review how to attract attention with LinkedIn Publisher â" without publishing anything at all (magic!) I created a LinkedIn Publisher post recently about How Recruiters can Actually Use Twitter. It did pretty well and as a result, it trended in LinkedInâs Pulse (nice!) This of course got it seen by loads more people and gave me more profile views and of course connections. Aiming to get your content onto Pulse (look at your LinkedIn homepage) is a great goal to have as it helps gain even more traction from not only your own community, but that of the wider LinkedIn network. Its pretty hard to get that level of trending though, but I have to meet a recruiter who didnt like a challenge! You can search for posts in your drop down search bar, so if youre into Twitter, assessment, the economy, that feature could work for you. Iâm not mad about the lack of search filters in this, but at least I can search by keyword. Think Like a Job Seeker Through my years of working in the Talent Acquisition industry, Iâve come across many professionals who have varying views on how to attract and find the right talent. Most professionals take a pray and post approach to finding talent. Instead of thinking outside the box to find talent, they rely on the traditional job boards, applicant tracking system, career page, and brand recognition. While having everything that I just mentioned is key to your employment branding and recruitment marketing strategy, you need more than that to attract passive job seekers. Passive job seekers arenât always on the hunt for their next role and typically donât frequent the same spots that an active job seeker would. In order to stand out from the crowd, I recommend adding another dynamic to your current strategy. Outside of the typical approach that most employers have, I encourage you to think like a job seeker. To find the best talent, you need to reach out to them in a way that truly connects with them. To do this, I recommend doing the following things: Facebook Groups Facebook may seem like a network that you frequent to chat with family and friends, but thereâs so much untapped potential within the network. Outside of the standard news feed, Facebook has many great professional job and industry-specific groups. The groups can range from tech jobs, industry professional networking, remote workers, and many more! On top of offering a wide variety of groups, the groups that you can discover are global, and not limited to your geographic location. Instagram While many professionals may write off this network, itâs definitely one that you should put on your list in 2019. Outside of stories and filters, you can source and find some amazing talent. The search capabilities on Instagram are very robust and user-friendly when it comes to finding talent based on location and skill set. Meetup.com The name may be deceiving, as it might come across as a dating site. Donât be fooled, as thereâs loads of potential with Meetup.com. If youâre looking for talent in your neck of the woods, youâll want to add it to your strategy. Meetup.com is global and offers thousands of professional and social groups. Whether youâre looking to find a Full Stack Engineer or interact with Java users, this site offers it all. You can engage with users via the message board, email, and attend meetups. Itâs a great way to source new talent, talk shop, or sponsor a group to increase your brand awareness. Industry Specific Sites To truly find the best passive talent out there, you need to play on the same playground that theyâre playing on. In the tech field, a lot of the talent that youâre looking for doesnât just spend their days on LinkedIn or Indeed. Consider adding the following sites to your strategy: Stack Overflow The worldâs most trusted developer resource. If the worldâs top developers are on here and youâre in need of a developer, you have no reason not to invest in it. Stack Overflow offers great talent attraction, the ability to post jobs, company pages, and great sourcing capabilities. Unlike other job boards, you canât Boolean Search from a search engine to find the great talent on Stack Overflow. GitHub Another great option to add to your strategy. While not as robust as Stack Overflow, GitHub still offers you the ability to post jobs. One plus side to GitHub is that you can source talent for free. It allows you to be very granular in your search, narrowing it down to tech stack and location. Dribbble Unlike Stack Overflow and GitHub, Dribbble is king when it comes to finding the top UX/UI talent. Dribbble allows you to source talent, post meetups/hiring events, post open jobs, and create a company page. In conclusion, if you want to find the top talent, you need to be where the top talent is at. The only way to do that is to think like a job seeker. When I graduated, I began working at an agency, and very much enjoyed my job. However, in todays market, it is difficult to get everything you need from a day job. One trend that is emerging to alleviate both concerns is the side-hustle. Side-hustling is when someone maintains a traditional day job while at the same time building a side business or career. In cases where the side-business becomes successful, many transition out of their day job. How do you define your personal brand? What does it mean for your company? My personal brand and my companys brand are really intimately tied together even our names rhyme, Im Tracy from Tradesy! For me, the desire to build my own personal brand comes from wanting to connect the Tradesy.com user experience to my own passion for making fashion affordable and accessible to all women, and relating my own experience as a woman trying to make it in fashion and tech is the best way to do that. So rather than presenting a glossed-over, glamorized image to our audience, I keep my lifestyle and my personal brand very honest and relatable. I love to talk about about my own challenges and how I overcome them, so that women know that Tradesy is a place where theyll be accepted and supported as they figure out how to look and feel great and find personal success without breaking the bank. What gave you the inspiration to build your company? I think as women, we tend to feel more confident and generate success for ourselves when we like how we look. But as I was building my career, I couldnt afford the fashion that I wanted. I noticed that lots of women have the same challenge, especially as we transition through all these life different life phases college to career; dating to marriage to motherhood. We all need to constantly update our wardrobes, and its expensive. So I built Tradesy to make great style accessible to every woman by providing a safe and easy system to buy and sell clothing straight from our closets. I envision a world in which we can always sell the things were not wearing to finance new purchases that we love. That mission continues to inspire me every day. What has been your experience with the side-hustling trend in Gen-Y? How do you see it impacting the marketplace? I side-hustled like crazy to build Tradesy! When the company was getting started at my kitchen table, I took side jobs doing social media and SEO for other start-ups, and I even rented out my bedroom on Airbnb and slept on my couch! I think that technology has enabled us all to find ways to side-hustle, whether its through selling our belongings and space, or doing flexible part-time work from home. And thats going to be a boon to entrepreneurship in general, giving a lot more people the chance to realize their dreams. I think were seeing a lot more creativity in the market in general because young people have new ways to pay the bills while working on projects that they care about. How can someone balance the responsibilities of a real job with a digital side-project? Not just from a time perspective, but to avoid negative criticism from employers? Its challenging for sure, but the solution for just about everything is hard work and time management. When I was getting started, I used to wake up in the middle of the night to tweet to potential customers overseas. I stopped exercising and gave up most of my social life for a few years too. Its not easy, but the bottom line is that anything worth having is worth sacrificing for, and you have to ruthlessly prioritize your time in order to make room for a passion project. Keep in mind that it wont be that way forever once youve proven that your side project is viable, youll be able to give up your full-time gig and have more balance in your life. What are 2-3 pieces of advice you would give to someone who is stuck in their career and looking to take a step to the next level? We often make the mistake of waiting until we feel utterly stuck and hopeless to try and start something new, and that can be really hard because your energy and inspirational resources are depleted by those negative feelings. So my number one piece of advice is to start NOW. Just do it today! Waiting around for the right time or the right idea is just keeping you stuck and creating a downward spiral that can be hard to climb out of. Every self-made entrepreneur faces seemingly-insurmountable doubts and challenges in the beginning, but they do the work to overcome those things, rather than just thinking about it and wishing for better circumstances. You dont need an earth-shattering idea or the perfect moment to begin your journey, you just need to start working, and the work will guide you as you go, making you smarter and stronger along the way. If you can devote 2-3 hours of time every day to pursuing something anything that feels more interesting and exciting than your current job, you will eventually find the formula to move forward. Pay attention to the competition so that youre informed about your market, but dont let it intimidate you or prevent you from pursuing something that you love. Every idea worth pursuing comes with its own competitive landscape. Stay hungry and curious, because the more you love learning about what you do, the easier it will be to stay ahead of the curve and remain engaged and committed to your work when the going gets tough. And remember: nothing thats worth doing is going to come easy, but life really opens up when you love what you do, so its all worth it in the end! When your prospective employee reads your resume it will be easy for them to determine if you are the right person for the job. Résumé Readiness ⦠The Whys and Hows for Updating - Hire Imaging Resume Readiness: Be Prepared âDonât go to the fish pond without a net.â ~ Japanese Proverb As a resume writer, I spend many hours digging for content and strategizing its presentation to showcase focus, value proposition, brand and metrics-driven successes for my clients. Time and again, I see firsthand the stress created for job seekers when they have been thrust into a job searchâ"voluntarily or involuntarilyâ"and are not prepared. Why the stress? Because opportunities frequently have quick turnaround times. In 2001, Career Directors International designated September the International Update Your Résumé Month as an incentive to professionals in all industries and at all levels (both employed or in an active job search) to be ready for great career opportunities. The event promotes awareness about the importance of having an updated resume ready. Why is having an updated resume important? Abraham Lincoln said, âI will prepare and some day my chance will come.â You never know when the need for an updated resume will surface. Here are five possible scenarios where being prepared with an updated resume could mean the difference between grabbing or missing that chance. Resume Readiness: The Whys Youâre in an active job search campaign. This oneâs obvious. If you are looking for work, you must have a current resume ready that is relevant to your target position(s) and audience. It may be an advertised opening or a lead from someone; you must jump on it. Competition is fierce in this tough economy. Youâre employed but are let go. Unfortunately, this is happening all over and in all industries. We all know someone who didnât see a layoff or termination coming. Many companiesâ"small and largeâ"are scaling back. Maybe youâve felt secure in your position, but there are now rumors of job cuts or layoffs. If they occur, will you be a step ahead? Doesnât it make sense to be proactive? An opening occurs within your company. Perhaps another employee where you work has been fired, promoted or has voluntarily left. That opening must be filled and you are qualified. Companies often hire from within. Itâs cheaper; an existing employee knows the business and the people. Having an updated resume will increase your chances to be a front-runner. It will also eliminate the stress to hurriedly come up with a resume. Iâve known people who had to do so within half a day! An opportunity outside your company arises that attracts you. It may be that you are not completely satisfied with your current job situation and are scouting to see what else is out there. You might be happy in your current position. Then you find out about a fantastic opportunity from a friend, family member or networking contact. You may well need to act fast. You want a raise or promotion. It may be time for your annual or six-month review. Or maybe you havenât had a review in awhile, and believe you deserve that salary increase or next level of responsibility. Providing a resume with updated work successes can only enhance your ability to present your case. At the very least, it shows your employer that you are diligent, proactive and organized. More importantly, it highlights your accountability and accomplishments within your current workplace. Resume Readiness: Four Key Questions In revising and updating your resume, keep in mind four key questions that employers want answers to; and that your resume should address: What position(s) are you seeking or what are you qualified to do that would be of value to us? What contributions and results make you a better âbuyâ for us than the other qualified candidates? What assets, qualifications and skills do you bring to the job that would lead us to believe you can deliver the results you say you can deliver? Can you provide specific metrics-qualified results (successes, achievements, accomplishments with numbers, percentages, dollars etc.) that you had in the past, that would suggest your ability to reproduce them for us in the future? Resume Readiness: 6 Tips Brainstorm your current career goals and make sure your resume still reflects and targets these goals. Use a headliner title or a focus statement. If your focus has changed, review your entire resume to make sure everything is still relevant and strategic to your present goals. Write all your accomplishments down since your last update. Did you work on a special project or initiative? Exceed quotas or goals? Bring in business? Keep business? Make money? Save money? Streamline operations? Be specific and quantify your results as much as possible. Also keep each achievement bullet briefâ"one to two lines if possible. Include any continuing education or professional development completed since the last update. Seminars, conferences, employer-sponsored training, certifications. Of course if youâve completed a degree, include it. And if any of this information is relevant to your goal, put it up frontâ"not at the bottom. An example would be recent attainment of Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification when youâre now seeking a Project Management role. Donât overlook your key brandingâ"your name and contact information. Is your name the way you want it? Is it aligned with your online identity? Do you have your current phone, email? How about LinkedIn? Cover experience since the update. Separate accountability from successes. You can use a brief paragraph to give a snapshot of how you came on board, your main challenge, money managed, people supervised, etc. Use bullets to showcase the above-mentioned successes in #2. Again, think about strategy and relevance to your current goals. Whatâs most important? For successes, ask âso whatâ for every statement. How did it matter? What was the impact? You donât have to reveal everything. Pull out the best morsels to whet their appetite. Include any honors, recognition or awards youâve received since the last update. The bottom line is to be prepared. You may get a call from John, the guy you met at last weekâs conference. Opportunities come out of the blue. Having an updated resume (and cover letter) enables you to jump in right away with a positive first impression. When crafting an updated resume, remember that you are selling yourself in a recession economy. There are parallels to selling a home today in a buyerâs market. You want to outshine the competition.
